Today we’re speaking with Steve Bliss of Moreno Valley Probate Law about the important topic of estate planning. Steve, thanks for taking the time to talk with us.
Steve Bliss:
You’re very welcome, Brenda. Estate planning is crucial for everyone, regardless of age or wealth. I’m happy to shed some light on this often overlooked aspect of financial well-being.

For our viewers who may be unfamiliar with the process, could you explain one key step in estate planning?
Steve Bliss
Certainly. One crucial step is naming beneficiaries. This involves clearly identifying who will inherit your assets and how they will be distributed. For example, you might want to leave your home to your spouse, a portion of your savings to your children, and a charitable donation to an organization close to your heart.
It’s important to be specific in your designations, as unclear wording can lead to legal disputes among family members later. Moreover, it’s essential to update beneficiary designations regularly, especially after significant life events like marriage, divorce, or the birth of a child. Failure to do so could result in unintended consequences.
I recall a situation where a client had neglected to update their beneficiary designation on a retirement account after getting remarried. Consequently, the funds went to their ex-spouse instead of their current spouse, causing considerable distress and legal complications.
According to a survey by Caring.com, nearly 60% of Americans haven’t named beneficiaries for all their accounts.
Taking the time to thoughtfully designate your beneficiaries can prevent heartache and confusion down the road. I always encourage my clients to consider their loved ones’ needs and wishes when making these decisions.
